#202 Björk, 'Homogenic' (1997)

“Thought that I could organise freedom/How Scandinavian of me,” Björk sings on the utterly brilliant opening track and third single, ‘Hunter.’  That sets the tone for the record, a record that heralds a shift in sound for the Icelandic singer. The album marries the sounds of electronic beats, with Icelandic music, bringing in elements of Classical and Baroque. That’ what it sounds like on paper, but it hardly describes it. Björk’s voice is an instrument in itself and one of the most unique voices on record. In full flight on second track, which happens to be the lead single, ‘Jóga,’ Björk repeatedly sings “Emergencccyy.” It’s almost hypnotic. ‘Unravel’ was cited by Thom Yorke as one of the most beautiful songs he’s ever heard, and look, he’s not wrong. It’s stunning!

The album would debut at #1 in her home country, and found top 10 success in the UK, Australia, France, Sweden, Germany and Norway. In the States it would be certified Gold four years after its release. Björk’s voice is understated, giving only as much as required in the song, allowing the music to lead the songs. It’s been named as one of the greatest electronic albums of the 20th Century by multiple publications and is definitely one of the most stunningly beautiful records of the past 15 years.
