#391 Kelis, 'Kaleidoscope' (1999)

New Entry

I’ve never really thought of Kelis as an album artist. She’s had some killer singles in her career. ‘Kaleidoscope,’ her debut album (21 years old later this week, by the way), was entirely produced by The Neptunes and bears all the hallmarks of Pharrell Williams. Kelis has said that she made no money from her first two record due to a bad deal she signed when she was 19.

My favourite tracks on the record happened to be the singles too. ‘Caught Out There’ (AKA “I hate you so much right now”) and ‘Good Stuff’ are really strong. I enjoyed the subsequent tracks but after about track 6, I felt the album started to run out of steam and I found myself bored and clock watching toward the end.
