#403 Ghostface Killah, 'Supreme Clientele' (2000)

New Entry

The second solo album from Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, starts off with the theme from the 1966 incarnation of the ‘Iron Man’ TV show, a reference to one of his aliases and something he’d be sued for by Marvel a few years later. The album features Ghostface Killah’s signature stream-of-consciousness style rapping. On this record he specifically avoided references to crime and materialism. The album was produced by Wu-Tang’s RZA, giving it sonic dynamic similar to their group (Kung fu references replaced with Iron Man). The album features most of the other members & affiliates of Wu-Tang Clan; Raekown, Method Man & Redman, Cappadonna, Superb & Hell Razah.

I’ve never listened to a GFK album in full before. Seen him live, and he was great. I enjoyed this. As mentioned previously, before the last challenge, Hip Hop wasn’t a genre I was really open to. Favourites included ‘Nutmeg’ and ‘Buck 50,’ which contains a sample of Baby Huey’s ‘Hard Times,’ also sampled in A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Can I Kick It? (Spirit Mix)’.
